Sleep – one of life’s greatest gifts. It gives your brain a peace of mind after a tiring long day at work. Not only benefitting your mental health and emotional balance, we have been reminded repeatedly that sleep helps our skin too. How exactly does it do so?


Our body clock recognizes the time of the day. Our skin cells are designated to go through specialised repairing processes at night. Based on researchers, the magic naturally happens between 11pm to 4am. During this period, mitosis will take place. It is a process whereby cells divide rapidly, repairing and renewing the skin, restoring skin health.

As the cells repair, they also secrete oil to the follicles. This is where countless dermatologists have warned us to remove makeup before sleep – it is to ensure that the skin is clear for the oil to surface smoothly. If there is found to be blockage, it is likely to cause acne hence destructing our ‘beauty sleep.’

Furthermore, the sleeping hormone (melatonin) rate increases. It acts as an antioxidant to fight ageing factors, fine lines and skin cancer. In general, sleeping at night activates hormonal growth that are essential for collagen-producing cells to regenerate and restore skin health, especially for its elasticity and firmness.


During the day, you often encounter things that will make your organ secrete stress hormones (cortisol). Sleeping gives your body a break from stressing out, thus reducing the overall rate of cortisol within you. At this time, your skin is not pressured to do anything except rejuvenate. Your skin cells are relaxed and avoiding large production of cortisol that might thin the skin, cause stretch marks or discoloration.


It has been studied that the skin heats up slightly when you are sleeping. It becomes more acidic as well, which primarily leads to your skin losing moisture. Your excessive layer of natural oils is also absent overnight, making your skin lose more water and ultimately results in drier skin. This drying process is commonly known as trans epidermal water loss. This is why dermatologists frequently advise us to put on moisturizers before sleeping so as to prevent our skin from dehydrating.

In addition, instead of depending solely on night moisturizers, you should hydrate yourself through dieting. Adjust yourself to healthy-snacking on fruits and vegetables that are rich in water content. Fruits and vegetables as such include cucumbers, watermelons and apples which their antioxidants will help replenish your skin while you sleep.


Sleeping at night is a bliss. At night, the sun is down and your skin is not exposed to any harmful sun rays. Your skin is safe from UV damage and protected from environmental pollutants as well as external bacteria. In this condition, your skin is truly resting from constantly combatting germs throughout the day, thus allowing it to rejuvenate better.

Avoid sacrificing your slumber for important or leisure activities. Sleep is vital for the holistic health. If you let yourself be sleep-deprived, you are jeopardizing your skin’s moisture levels, hormonal functions for body restoration, pH levels for fresh complexion, physical and mental rest.
